GK-12 News

December 14th, 2011 - Ken Gracz received $700 from Target to fund an upcoming, Spring 2012, field trip to Haw River State Park for his AP Biology and AP Environmental Science students. GK-12 Resident Scientist, Alex Congelosi, will be leading the trip which has been entitled -- 'Invasive Species Ecology at Haw River State Park' -- because of her previous experience in field work at the state park. The students will learn how field biologists estimate population sizes, develop and test hypotheses, and gather data from the field along with some basic plant and tree identification.

December 13th, 2011 - Kathy Melious and GK-12 Resident Scientist, Patrick Healy, received two new grants for a combined total of $1500! The two grants, Donors Choose and Chemistry in Communities, will go a long way to helping these two enrich the science curriculum for their students. Congratulations Kathy and Patrick!

December 6th, 2011 - Kathy Melious' ChemClub at Andrews High School gain accolades from the American Chemical Society for their chemical measurements of Boulding Branch Creek, at the Greenway. October 28th, 2011 - Presentation from the 2011 National Scholarship Outreach Conference (NOSC) conference on the campus of Michigan State University, authored by Lynn Sametz & Robin Tinghitella.

September 8th, 2011 - Guilford County Schools Regional Superintendent, Stephen Eldridge, stopped by Welborn Academy of Science & Technology to assist 6th grade students with a lab involving ice cream. It looks like everyone had a great time and learned some science in the process!
